Dobyns papers, 1950-1993.

Reports, articles and other research by Dobyns chiefly concerning historical and anthropological topics in Sonora, Mexico and Arizona history. There are transcriptions of baptismal records for Tubac, Tucson, and Tumacacori in the 1840s. Manuscripts and reports are present entitled index to "Tubac through Four Centuries", "Prehistoric Indian Occupation Within the Eastern Area of the Yuman Complex", "The Middle Mountain People: The Kinship Structure and Territorial Range of the Hualapai Congery", and articles by Dobyns relating to the Cornell Peru Project, anthropology, and Sonora and Arizona history. Reproductions from the Huntingdon Library of maps, distance table, and a photograph of Cave Couts, used in "Hepah, California" edited by Dobyns, are present with a proof copy of the book.

Cave Johnson Couts (1821-1874), a native of Tennessee, was an army officer ordered to Monterrey, Mexico who was later sent to California and led the escort for the U.S. Boundary Commission in 1849. Couts married Isidora Bandini (daughter of Juan Bandini) and became the owner of the large Guajome Rancho in San Diego County. He was engaged in the cattle business, and his son, Cave J. Couts, Jr. (1856-1943) became a civil engineer and worked as a deputy surveyor for San Diego County before he began...

Dr. Henry Dobyns joined the Cornell Peru Project as its Research Coordinator in 1960, after receiving his Ph.D. from Cornell. In 1962, he returned to campus to participate in training Peace Corps volunteers to work in Peru. The Peace Corps also contracted with Cornell to have the CPP advise Peace Corps officials in Lima and to evaluate their impact on the communities.
